Don Follis: What Mandela would say to newly elected officials

Watching the election results come in last Tuesday evening, I thought back to a few years ago when my wife and I boarded a boat in Cape Town, South Africa, and headed out 7 miles to tiny Robben Island. There Nelson Mandela, one of the great political leaders of the 20th century, lived for 18 of the 27 years he was kept behind bars.

Until a few years ago, I generally discounted the idea of naming a verse in the Bible as my favorite. I knew a lot of people had one. I just didn't. But then one of the pastors I most admire got me to embrace the concept.

Bishop Gwin to receive NAACP award

CHAMPAIGN — At the church known as "The Love Corner," Bishop Lloyd Gwin preaches a message that can be hard for some folks to accept:

Loving God's way can involve some pain, he says, because it involves helping and giving to others.

"The love of God is not just something we receive," Gwin says. "It's something we give."

By 6:30 a.m. last Monday, 40 sisters already had gathered for Mass at the St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel in Springfield. Before slipping into the back pew, I walked passed 10 sisters either in wheelchairs or pushing walkers.

Salt & Light reopening with changes after monthlong closure

CHAMPAIGN — When the Christian ministry Salt & Light reopens Monday after a monthlong closure, folks accustomed to going there for such things as food and clothing distributions are going to find some changes.

That includes a new thrift store, where people can come shop for clothing at their convenience, and a new food co-op with service work required to obtain food.
