Today begins Advent. I didn't even know what Advent was until I was 30 years old. Now it is my favorite season of the year. For more than 20 years, I have collected a box full of Advent books, readings and several advent wreaths.

Gifford pauses during recovery to give thanks

GIFFORD — One week after a powerful tornado leveled a quarter of the town, destroyed 60 homes, damaged 200 more and hospitalized at least six people, the people of Gifford paused from their recovery efforts to give thanks.

Don Follis: A bit of serenity for the holidays

One of my main prayers has just two words: Thank you. Around the dinner table we sing this simple prayer, "For health and strength and daily food, we praise your name, O Lord."

School to host all-day retreat for grades 7-12

DANVILLE — Schlarman Academy will host the nationally known Hard as Nails Ministries on Tuesday during an all-day spiritual retreat for students in grades 7-12.

The retreat will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Shebby Gymnasium on Schlarman's north campus, 2112 N. Vermilion St., Danville.

Students from other area schools and Catholic parishes have been invited to attend.

Exorcist describes battling evil

URBANA — The Rev. Vincent Lampert says he has literally stared evil in the face.

Lampert, pastor of St. Francis & St. Clare Catholic Church in Greenwood, Ind., is one of about 50 exorcists in the United States.
