'I just thought there's got to be something else'

CHAMPAIGN — Chase Hilgenbrinck got together with some friends last week to watch the soccer match between Portugal and Poland in the Euro Cup tournament. He watched the game through a different lens than most. Eight years ago, he was playing professional soccer in the MLS with the New England Revolution after a long stint with Chilean club Nublense.

One of the decisions that my dad and mom regretted was allowing me to join a harvest crew the summer when I was just 14.

A man in our church owned a company where he contracted with farmers to harvest their wheat crop. The wheat ripens in the Southern states first. This man had contracts with farmers from Oklahoma to South Dakota.

Schreder to take top spot at STM

CHAMPAIGN — A one-time St. Thomas More teacher is returning to take over as head administrator of Champaign's Catholic high school.

Jason Schreder is the pick to replace outgoing Principal Ryan Bustle, the Catholic Diocese of Peoria announced. Bustle is leaving at month's end for an administrative position at Pontiac High.

In its fourth year, AudioFeed not your typical Christian-music festival

URBANA — Musician and professed Christian Sean Michel likes to say "quote unquote" when he uses the term Christian music.

The gospel-music artist who performs at AudioFeed coming up this week in Urbana said there's a lot of cynicism and even disdain for "Christian music."

He himself believes most "Christian music" is not that good and is kind of cheesy.

Studio Visit: Stephen Buzard

Stephen Buzard, 27, formerly of Urbana, now of New York, chats with Melissa Merli. Buzard will become  the director of music at St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago on Sept. 1. He is currently the acting organist and director of music at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York.

Don Follis: In the river of grief, love is stronger than death

After the horrific killings in Orlando last weekend a man said to me, "I just can't imagine." That response reminded me of a reply I heard from a person earlier this spring. After watching Syrian refugees fleeing for their lives by crowding onto flimsy boats and taking out across the Mediterranean Sea, he said, "I just can't imagine. Besides, I try to keep my emotions out of the news."
