LIONS IN WINTER LITERARY FESTIVAL 2018

What: An annual literary festival, featuring readings by three visiting authors, CM Burroughs, Rachael Hanel and Vu Tran, who will also lead craft talks on writing poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction; an editors' panel; a book fair and more.

CHAMPAIGN — The rector of Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church was heartbroken yet thankful Tuesday evening in the wake of a two-alarm fire that broke out in the attic of the rectory at the downtown Champaign church, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

Early this month, a pastor sought my counsel and asked me to have lunch with him in a Bloomington-Normal café. He had just launched into his concern when an elderly couple appeared at the table next to ours. A man tightly held a woman's arm as she shuffled, moving her feet 6 inches at a time. Removing her coat, the man helped her into a chair, pushing it up to the table.

Danville church seeks return of stolen century-old bell

DANVILLE — Members of a Danville church are spreading the word about their stolen bell, hoping the information and offer of a reward might lead to its return.

"It's well over 100 years old," said Rod Godley, minister at the Vermilion Heights Christian Church, which is in The Heights neighborhood on the west edge of Danville.

While we're not aware of any area faith leaders who have taken a mission trip to Norway, you could fill a small church with local pastors who have been to many of the impoverished countries reportedly described by the president last week in a term not suitable for a family newspaper.

Tolono youths' mission: Warming up C-U at Home's fundraiser

TOLONO — Some local youths are taking on a project to help the homeless.

Children from area churches' youth groups are meeting Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church of Tolono to make no-sew fleece blankets that will be distributed at C-U at Home's One Winter Night fundraiser Feb. 2.

Weekend Planner: A hunger for giving

The parishioners of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church who will be flipping pancakes and cooking sausage today are doing more than filling the bellies of hundreds of guests. They are also raising money for local charities.
