Tolono near final list on road work

TOLONO — The board is expected to decide at its next meeting how much money to spend on street repairs this year — and where those repairs will be made.

Two weeks ago, engineer Tim LaRocque of Foth Infrastructure and Environment presented the village board with a list of streets that could be repaired and how much those repairs would cost.

Road work planned in Paxton

PAXTON — There will be lots of contractor activity in Paxton beginning later this month. Street department superintendent Randy Swan told the city council that Iroquois Paving secured the state bid to improve state Route 9 west of Interstate 57 and through the easternmost city limits.

URBANA — One of the issues local budgeters face with the gas tax model is that it's a per-gallon charge — whether gas is $1 or $4 per gallon, the amount drivers pay at the pump for road maintenance is the same.

So as gas prices go up and cars become more fuel-efficient, people buy less gas and the amount of money government agencies have to fix roads goes down.

CHAMPAIGN — Nearly two years have passed since drivers in Champaign and Urbana started paying a 4-cent gas tax for road maintenance, and the two cities are now ramping up street maintenance with hundreds of thousands of dollars of new revenue.

So what have drivers gotten in return for their four extra cents per gallon?

Overnight closures planned for I-74 eastbound

Interstate 74 eastbound near Mahomet will be closed overnight Tuesday and Wednesday nights for bridge work.

The highway will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. both nights so the final beams can be installed on the bridge carrying Lake of the Woods Road over I-74, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Parts of Sixth, John streets to be closed

CHAMPAIGN — Parts of two streets on the University of Illinois campus will be closed over the next several days.

A portion of Sixth Street will be closed beginning Monday due to electric installation work and the removal of a tower crane.

Sixth Street will be closed between Green and John streets from March 24 to March 30 for electric installation work.

Sign work to reduce Neil Street traffic Thursday

CHAMPAIGN — Traffic will be reduced on Neil Street in Champaign for most of the day Thursday to allow for the installation of a sign.

One southbound lane of Neil will be closed between Hill and Church streets from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting, while American Dowell Sign Co. installs a sign at 301 N. Neil St.

Work to close block of Second Street in Campustown

CHAMPAIGN — A block of Second Street in the campus area will be closed to through traffic for about a week starting Tuesday.

In order to install a sanitary sewer service connection at 112 E. Chalmers St., Mayfield Construction will close Second Street between Daniel and Chalmers streets.
