Every so often, I dive into the internet and come up with odd cinema-related sites that might be helpful or amusing to the cinephile. This time, I have some that could be both.

Rich Warren: The logic behind cordless charging

My friend Jim, the electronics wizard, offered the most plausible reason for smartphone cordless charging, as implemented in the new iPhones. It only partially involves convenience. By eliminating ports and jacks (even sealed jacks), it dramatically reduces the possibility of water penetrating the phone. Considering Jim repaired electronics for most of his life, he knows of what he speaks.

Top of the Morning, Sept. 22, 2017

Give the good-timing award to the Illini Quarterback Club. For the third year in a row, it's hosting a Punt, Pass & Kick competition for area youths. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday.

Last year, it was held at the Irwin Indoor Practice Facility. This year, the event is moving to Champaign's Zahnd Park.

The Emmys are behind us, and the new fall television season is upon us, so forgive me if I have TV on my mind again this week. It doesn't happen very often.

'Handmaid's Tale,' 'Veep' win top Emmys

LOS ANGELES — The dystopian series "The Handmaid's Tale" was crowned best TV drama on Sunday at the Emmy Awards, also winning best drama writing and directing and earning Elizabeth Moss a best actress statuette and Ann Dowd a best drama supporting actress award. "Veep" and "Saturday Night Live" were also big winners.

Impressive writers in town

The Pygmalion Fest is bringing some impressive writers to town this week, chief among them George Saunders, who's favored to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize for fiction with "Lincoln in the Bardo," his novel about Lincoln mourning in a cemetery his 11-year-old son, Willie. Saunders will speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Krannert Center.
