Champaign dedicates street to drug buster

Vera L. Wesley, 80, has lived in the neighborhood near Douglass Park for about 47 years. When the area experienced trouble with drugs and prostitution back in the 1980s, Wesley took up the fight for her neighborhood. By founding Concerned Citizens for Better Neighborhoods and by organizing marches, youth programs and after-school tutoring, Wesley has helped make Douglass Park a safer place for kids to grow up. For Wesley’s efforts, the City of Champaign on Friday, April 12, 2013, dedicated Eureka Street, between Fourth and Sixth streets, as Honorary Vera L. Wesley Way.
