Q: What's next for Lil Porgy's in Urbana?

A: Lil Porgy's BBQ at 101 W. University Ave., U, will soon close, but exactly when is still up in the air, according to longtime owner Bill Van De Wyngaerde.

"I'm going to turn 77 in September and I got to slow down. That's the honest truth," said the Urbana man, who still works lunch daily at his Urbana restaurant.

Van De Wyngaerde said it will be like "losing one of my kids" to close that restaurant, the original of his two locally revered barbecue joints.

He intends to continue business at the Champaign restaurant at 1917 W. Springfield Ave., where he makes his sauces and where the catering business is based.

Van De Wyngaerde said his loyal clientele at the Urbana restaurant are unhappy with him, but he needs to scale back just a bit, although he has no plans to retire.

Van De Wyngaerde put up a sign in front of the Urbana store earlier this month announcing the closing and thanking his patrons.
