CHAMPAIGN — Drivers may have noticed that getting around the University of Illinois campus west of the Quad has been a bit tricky this summer.

Because of the MCORE Project, Wright Street from Green Street to Armory Avenue has been reduced to one lane, and that's only one of the projects shutting down streets in the area.

A large building, which will be called The Hub, is going up on the intersection of Sixth and Green streets and has part of those streets closed down as well.

"This summer is one of the busiest summers we've had not only for campus but for the campus district," said Stacey DeLorenzo, the UI's transportation demand management coordinator.

DeLorenzo said The Hub, which will be 17 stories and 175 feet high, is set to be completed in December 2020, while the MCORE construction on that section of Wright Street is scheduled to be finished this December.

MCORE work will then move north of Green Street.

"Now it's kind of a mess, but it's going to look so nice and so clean, and it's going to be really a beautiful place to be," she said. "I think it'll all really be worth it. It's painful right now — painful for the users, painful for the builders — but I think it's going to be really nice in the end."
