CHAMPAIGN — More than two years after nurse midwife Ray Spooner passed away, a Mahomet-Seymour High School junior has made a documentary about Mr. Spooner's life and inspirational bike ride across the country.

The 25-minute film by Ethan Grinberg will be shown at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Art Theater, 126 W. Church St., C.

Grinberg, who has done other short films and documentaries, said Mr. Spooner was a family friend.

Mr. Spooner, who had worked for the Carle health system, set off on a bicycle ride across the U.S. in 2015 after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive and fatal disease. He died in August 2016.

Grinberg said he drew his research for the documentary from an interview with Mr. Spooner's wife, Rae, and the blog Mr. Spooner kept.

There will also be speakers at the documentary showing, and the event will serve as an advocacy event for ALS and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Grinberg said.
