THOMASBORO — The Thomasboro school board has set aside an hour before its monthly meeting to hear comments on whether to retain the school’s Indians mascot.

The forum is set from 5 to 6 p.m. Jan. 18 in the school gym. The school board meeting will follow.

The board has heard arguments for and against retaining the mascot in recent months.

The issue arose in 2020 when state Rep. Maurice West, D-Rockford, introduced a bill that would require Illinois high schools and middle schools with Native American mascots to get permission from tribes within 500 miles of the school if they wanted to continue to use them.

Thomasboro Superintendent Bonnie McArthur informed the board of the bill, and a member asked that the issue be brought up for discussion in 2021.
