CHAMPAIGN — It was business as usual on North Prospect Avenue after a car hit a power pole Friday afternoon near the intersection with Baytowne Drive, knocking out power for several large retailers in the area.

At Lowe's, 904 N. Prospect Ave., a backup generator took care of the problem, said Manager Jennifer Ingle.

"Our power is out, but we're still lit," read a sign in the front of Target, 2102 N. Prospect Ave., adding that shopping was able to continue.

Police said the outage started at 12:48 p.m. Ameren spokeswoman Kelly Hendrickson said it affected a handful of businesses for about two hours.

Champaign police Sgt. Jaceson Yandell said no one was injured or ticketed in the collision.

"Nobody was hurt; it didn't even kill a goose," he said.

Yandell said a car was traveling north on Prospect when the car in front of it suddenly braked, causing it to brake, swerve and hit the pole.
