CHAMPAIGN — A teen-age girl was hit by a sport utility vehicle as she crossed the street in the middle of a block in west Champaign on Wednesday morning.

Champaign police Lt. Bob Rea said the girl, age 14 or 15, was on her way to Centennial High School with a group of friends just before 8 a.m. when they crossed South Mattis Avenue in the middle of the block.

"One ran out in front of a southbund vehicle and was hit," Rea said.

"She was conscious, alert, breathing and responsive to medical personnel," he said.

Rea said she was taken to a hospital. He was unaware of her condition.

The accident happened in the 800 block of South Mattis just south of John Street. There was no crosswalk where the accident happened, he said. The teens were crossing from east to west.

"They chose to cross right in the middle of the block," he said.

The southbound lanes of Mattis in that area were closed for several minutes while first responders took care of the girl.

Rea said no ticket has been issued as the accident is still being investigated.
