UPDATE, 1:35 p.m. Friday:

CHAMAPAIGN — Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup identified the victim in Thursday night's shooting as 48-year-old Darin Mitchell of Champaign.

Northrup said Mitchell died at Carle Foundation Hospital at 7:13 a.m. Friday of a gunshot wound to the abdomen. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

CHAMPAIGN — Police are investigating the shooting death of a man Thursday night outside a veterans organization north of downtown.

Police have not released the name of the 48-year-old man killed or details of what led up to the shooting.

Officers were called to the American Legion, 708 N. Hickory St., C, about 9:10 p.m. They found the man with a "serious gunshot wound" and took him to a hospital, where he later died.

Police said the shooting happened near the entrance to the building after a verbal argument turned physical.

This is the fourth fatal shooting in Champaign in 2018.

Police are not saying if they have a suspect and are asking anyone who was there to contact the department at 217-351-4545 to arrange to speak privately with a detective.
