CHAMPAIGN – Joseph Rotman, 82, of Champaign passed away at 8:47 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 16, 2016) at the Meadowbrook Healthcare Center in Urbana.
Joe was born in Chicago on May 26, 1934, to Ely and Rose Wolf Rotman. He married Marganit Weinberger on Aug. 25, 1978.
Surviving are his wife, Marganit Rotman of Champaign; one daughter, Ella Rotman of Chicago; one son, Danny Rotman of Champaign; and one sister, Margolith Rotman of Chicago.
Joe received all of his academic degrees from the University of Chicago and was a professor of mathematics at the University of Illinois from 1959 until 2004. He was an author of seminal mathematical books that went into many reprints and editions.
Joe was very politically active and deeply concerned about social and humanitarian issues, an Illini basketball enthusiast, and a fan of word puzzles. He loved to travel and taught and lectured in many countries around the world.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Sinai Temple, 3104 Windsor Road, Champaign, with Rabbi Alan Cook officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Champaign.
