GIBSON CITY — Mildred I. “Milly” Alexander, 85, of Gibson City, formerly of Elliott, passed away at 11:57 p.m. Friday (Jan. 4, 2019) at Helia Healthcare of Champaign.

Funeral services will be at noon Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells St., Paxton, with the Rev. James C. Elder officiating. Burial will follow in Elliott Cemetery, Elliott. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Milly was born May 6, 1933, in Berea, Ky., the daughter of Charles R. and Mildred F. Paxton Cottrell. Milly spent her childhood in Paxton and graduated from Paxton High School in 1951. She married Donald E. Alexander on Dec. 21, 1952, at First United Methodist Church, Paxton. He preceded her in death July 1, 2018.  

She is survived by two sons, Bob (Lynette) Alexander of Gibson City and Doug Alexander of Bloomington; two daughters, Nancy (Dan) Hiner of Champaign and Linda (Paul) Smith of Mattoon; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bob Cottrell of Satellite Beach, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark Alexander; and one brother, Dick Cottrell.

Milly worked at the United States Postal Service for 21 years; the last 13 she served as postmaster in Elliott before retiring in 1992. She was a member of Wesbein United Methodist Church, Saybrook, and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.

Milly enjoyed knitting, playing golf and traveling. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
