HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — BSN, PHN, MNA Sally Dickerson Valentine of Huntington Beach, Calif., was born in Decatur, Ill., on Nov. 3, 1946, and had lived in Southern California since 1975. She died of complications from an eight-month battle with brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme, or GBM) on Tuesday, May 19, 2020.

Sally graduated from Champaign High School in 1964 and received her bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin in 1968 and a master's degree in nursing administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills, in 2000. She was initially employed in the nursing fields of pediatrics, psychiatry and public health.

These specialty areas of nursing preceded a more than two decade career as a school nurse in several communities in Orange County, Calif. While working in that capacity in the Irvine Unified School District, she was honored as the School Nurse of the Year in 1999.

Sally was always concerned about others and continually made herself available to those she found in need. In 2012, Sally and her husband, Dr. Robert Valentine, traveled to Botswana, where she helped develop and establish an adolescent scoliosis screening program for the World Spine Care philanthropy.

She was quite involved in numerous community activities and outreach organizations such as the Assistance League of Huntington Beach, especially in its association with the Silver Anchor program and its work with mentally compromised individuals in the community. Sally was also very involved in serving the Lord in her church, Surf City Church, UMC, in Huntington Beach.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert I. Valentine Jr. of Huntington Beach, whom she married in 1968 in Champaign; a son, Robert A. Valentine, and his wife, Angela Valentine, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Dr. Amy V. Alaluf, and her husband, Dr. Gershon Alaluf, of Newport Beach, Calif.; and three granddaughters, Maddy, Sadie and Josie Alaluf. Also surviving her are a sister, Cass Jarvis of Boulder, Colo., and a brother, Ray Dickerson of Springfield.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Ray C. Dickerson and Helen L. May (formerly Dickerson) of Champaign, and a daughter, Sarah E. Valentine (1981-1987) of Huntington Beach, with whom she is now joyfully reunited.

A celebration of life service is tentatively planned for later this year, should the current pandemic abate.
