Before the start of Illinois football's training camp on Aug. 2 in Champaign, beat writer Scott Richey is counting down the Top 50 most important Illini heading into the 2019 season:
No. 43: Edwin Carter
Vitals: 6-3, 180, R-Fr., WR
Hometown: Jacksonville, Fla.
High School: Sandalwood
Looking back at 2018: Carter arrived in Champaign as a three-star prospect with the potential to add some size and speed to Illinois' wide receiver corps. The north Florida native took advantage of an early opportunity, catching two touchdown passes in his Illini debut against Western Illinois. The second score, though, coincided with a brutal knee injury that sidelined Carter the rest of the season.
Looking ahead to 2019: To be fair, Carter's season-ending injury last September could have been worse given he landed in the end zone on his head. The knee injury was bad enough, but Carter was at least running around this spring even if he wasn't a full practice participant. Healthy, the redshirt freshman has shown he has sure hands, and the opportunity is there for any Illinois receiver to rise to the top.
