Looking back at 2018: Cumby had several high-major offers — mostly from the Big 12 — when he committed to Illinois in June 2018. Then the consensus three-star recruit, ranked as the No. 16 all-purpose back in the country in the Class of 2019, put together a standout senior season for the Wildcats, finishing with 1,420 yards of total offense (897 rushing, 523 receiving) and 22 touchdowns to head into his Illinois career with sizable expectations.

Looking ahead to 2019: Illinois has loads of running back depth heading into the fall. At least on paper. But Reggie Corbin is the only of the Illini's top four backs that has managed to avoid a season-ending injury at some point of his career, making depth at that spot important. Cumby's speed and versatility means Illinois offensive coordinator Rod Smith can use him in multiple spots on the field.
