Kawai makes more history at NCAA championships

ORLANDO, Fla. — Asuka Kawai's history-making run at the NCAA women's tennis championships will have another chapter in it.

The Illinois sophomore, who in reaching the Round of 16 became the first player in program history to do so, secured her place in the quarterfinals.

Kawai won her Round of 16 matchup on Wednesday night against No. 7-seed Alexa Graham of North Carolina 7-5, 6-3 in Orlando, Fla. Kawai will face top seed Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami in today's quarterfinals.

On the men's side, Aleks Kovacevic advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles championships on Wednesday in Orlando after Bar Botzer of Wake Forest withdrew due to injury.

The Illinois junior will face 54th-ranked Sam Riffice of Florida in today's quarterfinals.
